A calm, open-source alternative to Toby

Toby made collections of tabs on the new tab page popular. TabCabin offers the same calm collections view — plus kanban boards, notes, to-dos and reminders — and keeps your data in your browser, syncing only when you sign in, or through a server you run yourself.

Toby is a tab manager that replaces the new tab page with collections of saved tabs organized in spaces, with an online account for sync, sharing and paid plans.

Why people pick TabCabin

  • Choose between a board and a collections view for each category.
  • Mix links with notes, to-dos and reminders in the same group.
  • No account required; sign in only when you want sync, or run the sync server yourself.
  • Free and open source, with no limits on boards, tabs or notes.

When Toby may suit you better

  • You rely on sharing collections with a team in a hosted product.
  • You use Firefox — Toby has a Firefox add-on, TabCabin is Chromium-only for now.

Moving your tabs from Toby

  1. In Toby, export your collections as JSON (a single space, or your whole organization).
  2. In TabCabin open Settings → Data → Import from a file and choose that file.
  3. Spaces become categories and collections become groups; custom titles, descriptions and tags come along into a new workspace.
